( Lækjargata 3, Innbærinn, Akureyri )

A house with a story to tell

The house at Lækjargata 3 from the front, with its white fence and entrance stairs

Akureyri Lodge is housed in a historic timber building dating back to 1896.

It is a house with character rather than a hotel built to look historic. Over the years, it has evolved, been cared for and adapted for modern travellers while retaining the feeling of an old Icelandic home.

Today, three individual apartments occupy the house. Each has its own character and private entrance, while guests share the outdoor spaces and hot tub.

The result is somewhere between a private home and an apartment stay: independent enough to feel like your own place, but with the character and story of a house that has been part of Akureyri for generations.

  1. 1821

A house already stands on the plot: the Lilliendahl house, built by Lórenz Lilliendahl, a Dane born in Flensburg.

  2. 1896

The joiner and merchant Sigfús Jónsson and Marselína Kristjánsdóttir build the present house.

  3. 1898

Sigfús is given leave to build a photo shed at the back, where Marselína’s daughter Anna, who trained in Denmark, later runs a photographer’s studio. She also runs a shop selling handicrafts and ladies’ hats.

  4. 1923

For almost twenty years it is Hlíðarshúsið: the vet Sigurður Hlíðar downstairs, the baker Ole Hertervig upstairs.

  5. 1942

Twenty-two people live under its roof.

  6. 1990

    The house stands empty.

  7. 2001

A couple buy the house and begin to restore it.

  8. 2002

It is rebuilt on new foundations, keeping its original structure.

  9. 2003

The restoration wins the award of Akureyri’s house preservation fund.

  10. 2012

The town’s building survey gives it the highest preservation value.
