At Lækjargata 3, 600 Akureyri, in Innbærinn, Akureyri’s oldest neighbourhood. Private parking is directly in front of the house.
The house was built in 1896. It was bought in 2001 and rebuilt on new foundations in 2002, keeping its original structure, and the restoration won the award of Akureyri’s house preservation fund in 2003. In 2012 the town’s building survey gave it the highest preservation value.
The old town is all around the house: Nonnahús and the Akureyri Museum are nine and ten minutes away on foot. The botanical garden is nine minutes, the church steps fourteen, the swimming pool sixteen, the town square eighteen and Hof twenty-one.
Akureyri Airport is 2.5 km away, about five minutes by car.
Not in town. The botanical garden is nine minutes on foot, the swimming pool sixteen and the town square eighteen. For Goðafoss, Mývatn or Húsavík you will want one, or a tour with pickup in Akureyri.
Measured in Google Maps from the house: Goðafoss is about 30 minutes away, Húsavík about 1 hour, Lake Mývatn about 1 hour 6 minutes and Dettifoss about 1 hour 45 minutes by the fastest road, or about 2 hours by the paved road on the west side. The drives east go through the Vaðlaheiði tunnel, which has a toll.
Forest Lagoon is 2.6 km away, about four minutes by car, in the woods across the fjord. Akureyri’s swimming pool, Sundlaug Akureyrar, is sixteen minutes away on foot.
Yes. Elding sails all year from the Oddeyrarbót pier in Akureyri, 23 minutes from the house on foot. Boats also leave from Dalvík, all year, and from Húsavík, from 1 March to 30 November. All three are on our tours page and are booked through TourDesk.
Akureyri’s centre is just over one kilometre away on foot, and most of the restaurants, cafés and bars on our list are 14 to 20 minutes’ walk from the house. The nearest are the café in the botanical garden, ten minutes on foot, and North Restaurant, eleven minutes.
Our favourite places, by occasion and with the walk to each one, are on the Food & drink page.
Yes. Whale watching, the geothermal baths and day tours with pickup in Akureyri are on our tours page. You book and pay for most of them through TourDesk. The husky tours with Snow Dogs Iceland are booked on their own website.
You can ski at Hlíðarfjall, 11 minutes from the house by car, usually from late November to early May. You can also bathe in the snow at Forest Lagoon and the town pool, go whale watching from the pier in town all year, and watch for the northern lights on dark, clear nights.
Our winter page has the details, the daylight month by month and what to know before driving.
